Night Guard (Splint)

Night Guard (Splint)

Night guard or splint as it is known in the literature used to be an “orthodontic treatment continuation device” which we used primarily as a teeth protection tool, especially for preventing the deformation of the teeth during sleep after orthodontic treatment, nowadays it became a highly efficient and practical application which we use for multiple purposes in dentistry.

Thanks to the transparent plates made by dentists and dental technicians, it is possible to prevent the deformation of teeth during sleep, cope with teeth clenching which is one of the greatest problems, and prevent tooth losses and gingival infections.

Moreover, wearing and removing the night guards is effortless and extremely practical and it is usable by men and women of all ages. You can wear it before going to bed every night after cleaning your teeth and may remove it in the morning when your wake up.

The contribution of a simple application such as the use of night guard to general health, especially to oral and dental health cannot be underestimated.

What is a splint?

A splint is the general name of the transparent plate devices that are used separately for the upper and lower jaw. Removable splints are also used in orthodontic treatment. Transparent plates, which we call wireless orthodontics that are used for correcting the deformed teeth are also used for eliminating the closure problems of the jaw and to relax the jaw muscles.

Transparent splints produced in different degrees of softness can be used for a year, 24 hours a day for example depending on the treatment purpose.

For treatments such as wireless orthodontic treatment and/or jaw closure problems more than one plate is planned, and those plates are used subsequently. As the position and place of the teeth change, until they are in the planned position, multiple plates with different hardness are used and orthodontic treatment is completed without using wires.

In such cases, the splint is used throughout the day, only removed while eating and drinking, and must be kept in the mouth continuously throughout the night.

What is Night Guard?

Night guards are transparent plates that are used only at night. They usually do not require plate replacement, as they are not used to treat tooth position or jaw closure. If not broken, the same plate can be used for up to a year.

Another important difference from invisible transparent plates is that the night guard does not need to completely cover the teeth. Usually, it is enough to cover half of the tooth. They are softer, as the purpose of their use is not to create pressure on teeth but to prevent pressure on teeth and gingiva on teeth through the night.

Purpose of Night Guard / Splint

It is possible to damage the teeth in various ways during sleep. One of these is the habit of clenching and grinding teeth, which is a very distressing situation that threatens oral health and complicates daily life.

Another is the relapse or deformation of teeth that are corrected especially by orthodontic treatment due to open mouth breathing. The main purpose of the night guard was to prevent this aesthetic deformation. Over time, it was used to treat problems regarding the jaw joint and turned into one of the primary treatments we used under preventive dentistry.

We can define the main usage areas of use of the night guard, also known as joint plate, as follows:

  • Jaw Clenching

Jaw clenching is one of the most common dental problems among adults, but it is tolerated by most and becomes chronic.

The night guard is a great treatment method for eliminating the habit of jaw clenching, which has dangerous consequences that could lead to tooth loss, and it also helps to relax the jaw muscles. Thanks to the night guard, the jaw joint gradually stops locking itself and the stress accumulated in the jaw joint disperse and causes muscles to relax.

  • Jaw Joint Disorders Treatment

Disorders such as clenching, wisdom teeth, and joint rheumatism cause chronic pain, cystic formations, and spasm in the jaw joint. Night guard is a treatment device without any side effects with which we have achieved extremely efficient results in such cases.

In the treatment of jaw joint disorders, thanks to the night guard used alongside medicine treatment, it is possible to stop waking up with jaw pain and get rid of headaches.

How is Night Guard Made?

After the mouth is measured by the dentist, separate plates for the upper and lower jaw are produced by a dental technician or dentist in a clinic or dental laboratory often within a few hours on the same day according to the mold taken.

Then, first tests are done under dentist supervision to fit the nightguard and any points that sting or cut into gingiva or cheeks are removed.

After the dentist makes sure that the plate is fully seated in the mouth in a comfortable way, they share some information on its use.

How to Use Nightguard?

The night guard is attached to the brushed teeth and cleaned mouth and remains in the mouth overnight. Joint plate treatment is a treatment that requires the use of a night guard for a long time. Thus, using the plate for a few months before quitting is generally does not work, and doing so wastes your time and money.

The night guard is a device that needs to be used at least for a year. In fact, many dentists recommend lifetime use of night guard to protect dental health.

It may not be easy for some people to use such devices. While using the night guard, depending on the purpose of its use, considering the doctor’s advice on treatment duration, and using it for this duration without interruption is important. By doing so, you may get the required response from the treatment in the shortest time.

Transparent plates, which create great results when used regularly, unfortunately, do not work when neglected. Unused plates become useless in a few months.

How does Night Guard Work?

Transparent plaques that hold the teeth together also prevent the jawbone from locking while clenching. Thus, we can answer the question on the effects of the night guard which prevents many problems from occurring due to jaw clenching as follows:

  • Since it prevents clenching, it prevents the teeth from shifting, squeezing, and getting crooked.
  • It relaxes the jaw joint.
  • It eliminates headaches due to teeth clenching along with the tension and pain in the temples.
  • Clenching causes gingival diseases, and night guard helps protect the gingival health.
  • Teeth that are displaced due to clenching also begin to wobble due to inflammation that occurs in the gingiva. Night plaque protects oral health in the long term and allows us to prevent tooth loss due to clenching.
